The Emotion Guide for Kids… Explained by Gogu

The Emotion Guide for Kids… Explained by Gogu

Who am I and why do I know about emotions?

Hi, I’m Gogu, a tail-wagging Westie, found long ago in a shop, adopted with love, and turned into every child’s favorite neighbor. I’ve seen a lot: tears, laughter, tantrums, hugs, stolen biscuits, and lost toys. So I thought I’d explain emotions in my own way… through the eyes of a dog who loved and was loved for 12 years.

😊 Joy

What is joy to me?

Joy is like finding your favorite ball under the couch after thinking it was gone forever. It’s warm, bouncy, and makes you want to run in circles.

Kids feel joy when:

  • they play with someone they love,

  • they succeed at something hard,

  • they get an unexpected hug.

What parents can do:

Notice small joyful moments and name them: “I see how happy you are right now!”Kids learn to recognize the emotion this way.

😢 Sadness

What is sadness to me?

Sadness is like when it rains just as you were about to go for a walk. It’s nobody’s fault. It’s not a punishment. It’s just passing weather.

Kids feel sadness when:

  • they lose something important,

  • someone says no,

  • they feel lonely.

What parents can do:

Sit beside the child without trying to fix everything. Sometimes, the best thing is just being there—like a dog who lays next to you and rests his head on your knee.

😡 Anger

What is anger to me?

Anger is like when the neighbor’s cat steals your sunny spot. You want to bark, jump, and shout “NO!”

Kids get angry when:

  • they’re not being heard,

  • they’re tired,

  • the world feels unfair.

What parents can do:

Validate the emotion: “You’re angry. I get it.”Then offer a safe outlet: punch a pillow, tear paper, breathe like a dragon.

😨 Fear

What is fear to me?

Fear is like hearing a strange noise at night and not knowing if it’s the wind or a monster trying to steal your biscuits.

Kids feel fear of:

  • darkness,

  • separation,

  • new things.

What parents can do:

Turn fear into a story: “Let’s see what kind of wind that was. Maybe it was a sleepy wind looking for a pillow.”

😳 Shame

What is shame to me?

Shame is like dropping your water bowl in front of all the dogs at the park. You want to disappear under the bench.

Kids feel shame when:

  • they mess up in public,

  • they’re scolded,

  • they feel watched.

What parents can do:

Normalize mistakes: “We all mess up. Me. You. Gogu. Even the neighbor’s cat.”

💗 Love

What is love to me?

Love is the simplest emotion. It’s like coming home and someone waiting at the door, even if you’re late.

Kids feel love when:

  • they’re seen,

  • they’re heard,

  • they’re accepted.

What parents can do:

Offer love in every language: hugs, words, time, play, warm looks.

Gogu’s Conclusion

Emotions aren’t good or bad. They’re like weather: they come, go, and return.Kids need to understand them, name them, and know they’re not alone in them. And I, Gogu, am here to explain them all—with my tail held high.

Bonus: 5 quick Gogu-inspired activities

  • Draw emotions as funny animals.

  • Create an “emotion box” – notes with situations to discuss.

  • Play “Gogu says”: act out emotions.

  • Make a visual journal with stickers.

  • Create a character (Gogu Junior) who explains emotions to your child.
